Midthunder was raised in Shiprock, New Mexico and is of the Assiniboine Fort Peck Tribe. Her family is of The Navajo Nation of Shiprock in New Mexico. After spending the majority of her youth at Santa Fe (where she went to the Academy for Technology and the Classics as well as where her mother worked for a casting house) after which she came to her home. Amber has Native American ancestry on her father's side. Both of them are part of the Fort Peck Sioux Tribe. Amber is of mixed heritage because her mother was adopted. Prey is a majority Native American cast, including Dakota Beavers as Naru's brother and Jhane Meyers who was Comanche and Blackfeet and provided extensive advice to the production. Because of the time during which the movie is set, it was not an option to choose any dog. Coco the charming animal actress who plays Sarii was picked because of her unique breed of American Dingo. It's one of the oldest dog breeds and is is also known under its own name, Carolina Dog.
